Hubbard Glacier

We really looked forward to getting to the Hubbard Glacier and awoke at 6 AM just as the ship entered the inlet. We traveled for about an hour before you could see the glacier in the distance. It was a bit rainy but Ruth, David and I found a spot under an overhang. As we neared the glacier it got a lot colder. As we got to within a mile of the glacier a tour group transferred to a smaller boat which was able to get the 150 passengers fairly close (within 1/2 mile) of the glacier. One lady came out on the deck in flip flops while we were standing out in the cold and made a comment she didn’t think Alaska got that cold and that they were definitely not prepared for the cold. Not sure if she was expecting Aruba but she obviously didn’t read anything about Alaska travel.

Unfortunately we were not able to get much closer to the glacier that 1 mile. During our last trip we were within a half mile and could see the glacier up close, hear the ice crack and watch it as it crashed into the ocean.

The scenerly is beautiful however and we thoroughly enjoyed it even though we were a little jealous of the 150 people on the tour who got a lot closer.
