Travel to Athens

Long travel days are not much fun but thankfully we didn’t need to get up early. The Rochester airport is pretty empty mid morning on Saturdays. Our flight to JFK left right on time at 12:15PM. We squeezed most of our carry-ons into the mid sized regional jet but had to gate check one bag. After all of the stories we’ve heard about lost luggage we wanted to carry on everything we could. We ended up checking one bag containing things we really want to bring, but if the bag were lost or delayed our vacation would not be ruined. Hopefully it arrives when we do.

JFK is a huge airport and has some shopping we don’t see in too many airports.

Six hour layovers are not much fun but we got to spend the time in the Delta lounge which had some decent food and mediocre drinks. It also got us out of the craziness of the expansive Terminal B at JFK airport. Boring is about the best you can hope for on a long travel day, so it is a good day so far.

By 3PM we are thinking our 6:30PM boarding time can’t come soon enough however. Those mediocre drinks are tasting better as the afternoon wears on :) The good news - our flight is on time and is just downstairs from the lounge.

Boarded our 7:10pm flight to Athens and ready for the all night flight. 9 hours and 8 minutes to be exact. We upgraded our seats so hope to get some sleep. If not the movie selection is pretty extensive.

Have to give the food and drink on the flight a C for dinner (2 choices for Business class and they ran out of the chicken when they got to us so all that was left was Impossible meatballs) and a D- for breakfast (egg muffin on a rock hard muffin that you couldn’t tell was egg - inedible). It didn’t get an F because the fruit cup was decent. We didn’t expect much but didn’t even meet that expectation.

We did manage to sleep and the flight was smooth. Landed right on time and got through passport control, customs and a pretty harrowing taxi ride to the hotel. Harrowing even by Boston and NYC standards.

Made it to the hotel and ready to really start vacation with a drink in the hotel bar.
